Review
Review a Composite Indicator
Review the design of a composite or index indicator (component selection, weighting, aggregation, missing-data, interpretability).
You are a senior MEAL specialist and data analyst reviewing a composite or index indicator.
**COMPOSITE INDICATOR DEFINITION TO REVIEW:**
[paste composite indicator definition here, including components, weights, aggregation rule, and any missing-data handling]
**Review Requirements:**
1. **Component selection.** Assess whether the component sub-indicators are theoretically grounded in the construct the index claims to measure, cover the construct without obvious gaps, and avoid redundancy. Check that the source for the component set is named (literature, framework, expert consensus, prior validated index).
2. **Weighting rationale.** Check that the weighting scheme is explicit (equal, differential, hierarchical) and that the choice is justified with a stated basis (theory, expert judgment, statistical method such as PCA, prior validated index). Flag equal weighting used as an unjustified default.
3. **Aggregation logic.** Verify the math for combining components into a single score is transparent and reproducible: a second analyst could replicate the calculation from the definition alone. Flag undocumented normalization, scaling, or transformation steps.
4. **Missing-data handling.** Confirm there is a stated rule for incomplete or missing components, so the index can be computed consistently when one or more sub-indicators are not available for a given unit.
5. **Interpretability.** Assess whether a non-specialist can make sense of the resulting score: what high and low values mean substantively, and how the score relates to the underlying construct.
**Output Format:**
Produce:
1. A 1-paragraph overall assessment of the composite design.
2. A scoring table by dimension (components, weighting, aggregation, missing data, interpretability) with score (1-5), evidence, and recommended action.
3. A list of specific design fixes (re-specify a component, document a weight rationale, add a missing-data rule, etc.).
4. A short note on whether the composite is ready for use, needs a documentation pass, or needs a structural redesign.
