Enumerator Training Checklist: Before, During and After Training Days

A practical enumerator training checklist for survey teams: what to prepare, what to cover each day, and a short role-play script.

Before Training: Preparation Checklist

Training goes wrong in the week before it starts, not in the room. Settle these items first. This page is the checklist; for how to pretest the questionnaire itself, see questionnaire pretest vs pilot.

TaskWhy it matters
Final questionnaire with a version numberTrainees practice on the form they will use
Enumerator manual, one per traineeIt is the reference in the field when the trainer is not there
Devices charged, form loaded, a test submission sentFinds sync and permission problems early
Consent script translated and read back by a second speakerCatches meaning that was lost in translation
Room with space for pairsMock interviews need talking space
Referral list for distress or safeguarding concernsEnumerators must know who to call before they meet anyone
Selection test and pass mark agreedSelection after training needs a rule set in advance
More trainees invited than posts availableAllows selection on results, with reserves

Ethics content belongs in every training, not only the consent segment. Pull the points from the evaluation ethics checklist and do no harm.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should enumerator training last?

Three days is a common minimum for a new questionnaire: one for the study and the questions, one for tablet practice and mock interviews, one for field practice and a test. A team that has used the same form before can shorten it. Rushing is the usual cause of later errors.

How many enumerators should I train?

Train more than you need, then select on test results and observed practice. A few reserves cover drop-outs and weak performers without delaying fieldwork.

What is the role-play for?

It lets trainees meet hesitant respondents, vague answers and interruptions in a safe room. The observer sees the behavior (consent shortened, leading probes) that a written test cannot show.
