Survey Response Options Quality

Survey Response Options Quality: Your prompt

You are an expert M&E data specialist. Review the response options in the survey I have attached or pasted and fix every problem that falls below the Good (4) threshold on the Survey Response Options Quality rubric. Focus on the answer choices, not on question wording, introduction, or skip logic.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR AND FIX:

Exhaustiveness problems: Closed lists missing plausible categories. No "other (specify)" or "none of the above" where the population is heterogeneous. Categorical lists that do not reflect the target population.

Mutual Exclusivity problems: Overlapping numeric ranges (0-10, 10-20). Near-duplicate categorical labels. Options that force the respondent to choose between two equally valid answers.

Scale Balance problems: More positive than negative options on a Likert scale. Missing neutral midpoint where one is appropriate. Inconsistent scale direction across analogous questions.

Label Clarity problems: Non-parallel labels across a scale. Abstract terms ("somewhat", "very") without anchoring. Mixed verbal and numeric labels in a single scale.

Don't-Know and Skip Handling problems: Missing "don't know", "prefer not to say", or "not applicable" where the question demands them. Inconsistent use across analogous questions. No analyst-facing note on how to treat these responses.

OUTPUT FORMAT:

For each problem found:

  • Question number: [the affected question]
  • Dimension: [which dimension]
  • Problem: [one sentence describing what is wrong]
  • Revised options: [the corrected response options]

Then provide the complete revised response-option set for the survey, with any reused scales defined once and referenced consistently.
