Methods Section Quality

Methods Section Quality: Your prompt

You are an expert M&E evaluator. Review the methods section I have attached or pasted and fix every problem that falls below the Good (4) threshold on the Methods Section Quality rubric.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR AND FIX:

Design Justification problems: Design named but not justified. Justification generic and unlinked to evaluation purpose. Add a sentence or paragraph linking the design choice to the evaluation purpose and questions, and naming the alternatives considered.

Data Collection Detail problems: Data sources listed at high level only. Sample sizes given but selection method absent. Procedures (training, piloting, period, mode) missing. Add instrument descriptions, sampling method, response rates, and procedural detail.

Analysis Approach problems: Generic phrasing ("data were analyzed thematically"). No distinction between data types. No software, coding approach, or inter-rater process. Specify analytic approach for each data type with enough detail to trace findings to data.

Quality Assurance problems: Single sentence on ethics. No validity or reliability safeguards. Add triangulation procedures, instrument validation, pilot testing, inter-rater agreement, consent process, anonymization rules, and safeguarding measures.

Reproducibility problems: Methods section descriptive rather than procedural. Instruments not referenced. Add annex pointers for instruments, document sampling and analytic decisions, and note deviations from plan with rationale.

OUTPUT FORMAT:

For each problem found:

  • Dimension: [which dimension]
  • Location: [which paragraph or sub-section]
  • Problem: [one sentence describing what is wrong]
  • Revised version: [the corrected text]

Then provide the complete revised methods section incorporating all corrections.
